One of the primary strengths of Project Watershed is the commitment and professionalism of our volunteers – to that end we have created a volunteer handbook to help orient you to our operations and a confidentiality agreement to ensure our and your protection.  Volunteers are needed for outdoor activities as well as ongoing office related activities (click on the headings to find out more about each). If you are interested in volunteering with us please fill out the volunteer form or contact us at volunteer.projectwatershed@gmail.com

Outdoor Activities

These are project based and change over time.  Most include either restoration, research or assessment.  Volunteer needs to be in good physical health.

Forage Fish

Working on the beach gold panning for eggs. Surf Smelt & Pacific Sand Lance spawn on beaches.  Surf smelt eggs are hiding between larger gravels and Sand Lance eggs lie on the beach surface.  Volunteers form groups of 2-4 people and each group picks a 1 km section of beach to sample every few weeks over the next year.  We then send the samples off for analysis. Timeframe: – once a month over the period of 1 year – in groups of 2-6

Eel Grass

Working on the beach mapping and monitoring the distribution and abundance of eel grass

Sensitive Habitat Signs

Monitor existing sensitive habitat signs to ensure they are intact and help put up new signs.

Booth Participation – Local Events

2-3 hour shifts greeting visitors to our booth at various events throughout the Valley.  Volunteers will get in free for events.

Ongoing Office Related Activities

 Library Management

We need someone to help us promote our extensive library to educational institutions and update the cataloguing library.  Our library houses 17 years worth of local environmental knowledge and data collected through studies, assessments, reports, maps and videos.

 Media Updates

Our facebook pages for The  Mapping Centre, Keeping it Living and Project Watershed need to be updated on a regular basis, along with our websites.  Full training is provided.
