Biological Assistant and Program Coordinator
Project Watershed is a small and dynamic non-profit environmental organization based in the Comox Valley, on the unceded territory of the K’ómoks First Nation. With a focus on sensitive habitat stewardship, restoration education and mapping, Project Watershed undertakes large and small scale coastal and watershed restoration initiatives. Project Watershed has a long history of collaborating and partnering with local governments, First Nations, academia, environmental organizations and schools to raise awareness and enhance sensitive habitats in the beautiful Comox Valley.
The Comox Valley located on the east coast of south-central Vancouver Island, with its seaside location, nearby forests and mountains, offers endless recreational opportunities and also supports a lively arts and cultural scene. Project Watershed is a well-known and respected organization within the community; its staff and volunteers work hard to improve the health of environments and habitats in the Comox Valley and northern Salish Sea.
The Society is offering a contract for a two-year, part-time term (22.5 hrs./ week) opportunity, with the possibility of extension, to perform as a Biological Assistant and Program Coordinator. This is an opportunity to deepen your expertise working on innovative and collaborative multidisciplinary habitat restoration projects. Project Watershed supports professional growth; opportunities for training and mentoring will be provided.
Working in a complementary fashion, the Contractor will assist the Project Manager and Estuary Coordinator with the “Coastal Restoration Project” and with ongoing project work as needed and/or directed including, but not limited to:
- Providing biological support and expertise for defined projects.
- Providing assistance with the execution of project work including coordinating tasks, undertaking fieldwork, communicating with outside contractors, tracking milestones; all done to ensure those project deliverables are achieved professionally and in a timely manner.
- Providing technical mapping assistance and production of maps as required.
- Preparation of technical reports based on current scientific knowledge, baseline and/or post-project data collection and peer-reviewed literature.
- Undertaking post-project monitoring as required.
- Attending monthly Estuary Working Group and quarterly Technical Committee meetings and supporting initiatives identified by the committees.
- Participating at special events if requested: e.g. awareness campaigns, forums, workshops and symposia.
- Searching out and preparing funding proposals to support projects relevant to Project Watershed.
- Contributing posts and other relevant reports, information etc., as may be of value to the Project Watershed website: www.projectwatershed.ca
- Giving presentations as requested (time and budget permitting).
Requirements / Qualifications:
- Minimum Bachelor of Science in Biology, Ecology, Restoration of Natural Systems, Environmental Science or equivalent.
- Ideally two or more years of relevant experience in a professional consulting context.
- Must be knowledgeable in the use of GIS hardware and software including ArcGIS and ArcView.
- Working knowledge of MS Office, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Working knowledge of Google web-based applications, including Gmail, Google Drive, Google Forms, Google Calendar.
- Typing speed min 55 words /minute.
- First Aid, WHIMS are an asset but not necessary.
- Boat handling experience is an asset but not necessary.
- Ability to communicate with senior management, fellow team members, regulatory agencies, local stakeholders, First Nations groups and the public.
- Organized, efficient and thorough.
- A multi-tasker, who can quickly and efficiently prioritize tasks.
- Able to work independently.
Physically fit and willing to work outdoors in order to conduct fieldwork.
- A team player.

Project Watershed’s Kus-kus-sum project is important for supporting the broader Salish Sea Ecosystem. The project will restore habitat for fish and wildlife, attenuate flooding, and create habitat connectivity to adjacent conservation lands in the estuary. Kus-kus-sum provides habitat for mobile species, such as salmon, that utilize the broader Salish Sea ecosystem in their lives.

The B.C. government has set aside $1.5 billion for COVID-19 economic recovery. Dogwood BC recently surveyed supporters and allies to ask how that stimulus money should be spent in ways that will put people back to work, advance our climate goals and build stronger communities.
The Comox Valley Monarch Lions Club donated $600 to Project Watershed as part of its mandate to serve local charitable organizations. The funds will be applied to the on-going land purchase for Kus-kus-sum.
Morrison Creek Streamkeepers and Comox Valley Land Trust Recognized for Efforts to Protect Morrison Creek Headwaters
The Morrison Creek Streamkeepers and Comox Valley Land Trust were recently honoured as recipients of Project Watershed’s annual ‘Keeping it Living’ award. The award, an original painting by local artist Bev Byerley, is presented to an organization in the Comox Valley that has made a significant contribution to the restoration and protection of the K’ómoks Estuary and its watersheds.
