Description

Want to explore local streams while helping gather data that supports watershed research and decision-making? Join one of the local stewardship groups participating in this summer’s Community Water Monitoring Initiative!

For more information on the importance of this initiative read Stream Monitoring Helps Protect Your Local Watershed!

    What You’ll Do:

    • Use professional water meters to monitor local streams.
    • Learn how water quality parameters relate to stream health.
    • Walk through watersheds, rain or shine, while making a real impact.

    Training

Before monitoring begins, volunteers must attend one in-person training session at Glen Urquhart Creek, Comox Bay Farm (meet at the corner of 10th St E and Williams Rd).

Training will introduce the program and demonstrate how to use monitoring equipment in the field. Equipment and materials are provided.

    Summer Monitoring

After training, you’ll help your local group visit each stream site once per week for 5 consecutive weeks starting the week of July 27 (exact dates/locations TBD).

    Participating Groups:

    • Project Watershed (Glen Urquhart & Mallard Creeks)
    • Tsolum River Restoration Society (Tsolum River)
    • Morrison Creek Streamkeepers (Morrison & Arden Creeks)
    • Perseverance Creek Streamkeepers (Lower Perseverance Creek)
    • Millard-Piercy Watershed Stewards (Millard & Piercy Creeks)
    • Beaufort Watershed Stewards (Royston Pod – multiple streams)
    • Little River Enhancement Society (Little River)

    Volunteer Requirements:

    • Attend one training session
    • Join as many weekly monitoring trips as possible (ideally all 5)
    • Be 16+ (or 10+ if accompanied by an adult)
    • Be comfortable navigating uneven, wet terrain and reaching into streams

Optional: Bring a friend to monitor as a team!

If you’re eager to help but unsure whether you meet the requirements, please reach out to Casey Doucet at casey.doucet@projectwatershed.ca

    Fall Monitoring

Stay tuned for information about the fall water quality monitoring program! Summer-trained volunteers are welcome (and don’t need to attend a fall training session unless you’d like a refresher).
