Description

Want to explore local streams while helping gather data that supports watershed research and decision-making? Join one of the local stewardship groups participating in this summer’s Community Water Monitoring Initiative!

For more information on the importance of this initiative read our latest update: Community Water Monitoring – Summer 2025.

    What You’ll Do:

    • Use professional water meters to monitor local streams.
    • Learn how water quality parameters relate to stream health.
    • Walk through watersheds, rain or shine, while collecting valuable data.

    Participating Groups:

    Fall Monitoring

Each group will visit all of their sites once per week for at least 5 consecutive weeks beginning the week of October 5 (exact dates/locations TBD).

Volunteers will be connected with the group(s) they indicate they are interested in supporting and are asked to join as many weekly monitoring trips as possible. Volunteers may also opt to be “floaters” to be contacted on an as needed basis.

Teams of 3-5 are ideal, however, at minimum 2 people are required to conduct monitoring.

    Recommended Training

Before monitoring begins, in-person training sessions will be held at Glen Urquhart Creek, Comox Bay Farm (meet at the corner of 10th St E and Williams Rd).

Training will introduce the program and demonstrate how to use monitoring equipment in the field. Two sessions will be offered, but volunteers need only attend one. Equipment and materials are provided.

The training is optional but highly encouraged! At least one trained person, a “Team Lead”, always needs to be present when monitoring — the more people trained, the easier it is for groups to coordinate coverage!

    Volunteer Requirements:

    • Be comfortable navigating uneven, wet terrain and reaching into streams
    • Be 16+ (or 10+ if accompanied by an adult)

    “Team Lead” Requirements:

    • Attend a training session within the last year (summer-trained volunteers are already qualified)

If you’re eager to help but unsure whether you meet the requirements, please reach out to Casey Doucet at casey.doucet@projectwatershed.ca
