This year we will be celebrating the removal of the dock, dolphins and pilings at Kus-kus-sum – the first tangible step towards reclaiming the site. We will show a mini documentary and people involved with the project will be available to answer any questions. Also new this year – surprise bags – for $20 you can get one of 20 surprise bags. We will randomly spread great prizes among the bags and one special bag will have a big surprise!

This year Monica Gewurz, an artist living in Vancouver, will be joining us for this event. Monica donated the image Ebbing for the new label on the 40 KNOTS Safe Haven wine. 40 KNOTS donates $1 from the purchase of every bottle of Safe Haven to Project Watershed. Monica has also generously donated Copper Ocean and Ebbing reproductions to Project Watershed – these items will be available for purchase at the event and 100% of the proceeds will go to Project Watershed. Monica will bring the original Ebbing painting to the event and if it sells she will donate 15% of the sale to Project Watershed. She will also be available to sign bottles of Safe Haven that get purchased.

More about Monica Gewurz

Monica Gewurz is a mixed media contemporary artist living in Vancouver. Born in Lima, Peru, Monica immigrated to Canada in 1976 where she obtained her Bachelor of Science and Masters in Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning. She also holds both, a Fine Art and an Advance Painting Certificates from Emily Carr University of Art and Designs. She lives in Vancouver and has traveled extensively throughout the world studying different art forms.

She applies paint with brush and palette knives to produce a 3-D effect suggesting organic energy flow and movement. The complex surface and depth in her paintings are created using layers of opaque and translucent acrylic gels, inks and natural materials such as sand, paper, fabric, glass, silver dust, and stone.

She is a supporter of Nature Trust BC, the Pacific Salmon Foundation and other great environmental causes. This summer while visiting the Comox Valley, she was inspired by the Kus-kus-sum initiative and our other projects in the Island, and decided to support this great project by donating some of her art work. Prints of Ebbing (featured in the 40 Knot fortified wine) will be available for sale and Copper Ocean, another of her paintings, will be auctioned with the photographs.
