Happy Technician Tuesday! On October 13th, our technician team and other Project Watershed staff partnered with Lisa and Jamie from the Association for Denman Island Marine Stewards (ADMIS) to clean up abandoned encampments from Hollyhock Flats and the area around Glen Urquhart Creek.
Happy Technician Tuesday! Our team has been busy testing methods for future monitoring protocols at Kus-kus-sum. As a starting point, we focused on invertebrates and sediments. The goal is to create a system of data collection to measure ecosystem health.
Happy Technician Tuesday! While working around Glen Urquhart stream, our Technician team has experienced numerous encounters with fauna using the site. The presence of wildlife at Glen Urquhart further justifies the need to preserve and restore the area.
We are excited to announce that as of the end of September, we finished the removal, crushing and repurposing of the surface concrete at Kus-kus-sum. All crushed concrete was successfully repurposed offsite to projects throughout the Comox Valley to be used as fill and road base. As we removed the surface material, we uncovered a few areas with additional sub-surface concrete.
Happy Technician Tuesday! In June, our technician team planted a large number of Lyngbye’s Sedge and some Tufted Hair Grass to restore areas of Hollyhock Flats.
Happy Technician Tuesday! Earlier this year, our technician team surveyed Glen Urquhart stream to assess its profile for future stream restoration projects. While Glen Urquhart has been highly modified and impacted, salmon and other fish species do utilize it. Improved habitat in this area will directly benefit those species.

The family of Micah Messent would like to announce their support of the Kus-kus-sum restoration project, and Project Watershed, through the creation of the Micah Messent Legacy Fund. The fund will support the restoration of Kus-kus-sum and Project Watershed’s work to further Micah’s legacy within and beyond the Comox Valley.
Here in the Comox Valley, our local beaches have a story to tell about a small fish that is so much more. Maybe you’ve seen Project Watershed out on local beaches, with measuring tapes and high visibility vests, trying to learn more about this small fish with a big impact!
