Lesson

  1. This lesson can follow the Coin Box Lesson or stand alone. If following the coin box lesson the amount of money from the coin boxes is the budget for this lesson. If this is stand alone create or give the students an amount of money for the budget. Either way every student should have the same income.
  2. Students choose which kind of plants to plant: a)eelgrass, b)salt marsh, c)land based native plants. Using the Planting Prices and Specifications sheet provided they can decide how many they can afford (Grade 7’s need to add 0.05% for gst and 0.07% for pst).
  3. Using the Planting Prices and Specifications sheet they can create a drawing on grid paper of the area to be planted with symbols showing the plants and create a Planting Summary Report that details where, how, and when to plant (taking things like tides into consideration).
  4. Students to review their and others planting plans in small groups, discuss which got more plants planted, which covered more area. Each group to report their finding back to the class.
