CEC-CCA-LOGOThe Comox Valley Project Watershed Society (CVPW) and the Squamish River Watershed Society (SRWS) received funding from the CEC (Commission for Environmental Cooperation) to carry out Blue Carbon research and development (report included in article). The CEC is mandated to address some of North America’s most pressing environmental priorities through its cooperative work program and other initiatives. Public participation in these efforts and responding to citizen submissions about environmental enforcement are central to its work. The NAPECA Community Grant Program (North American Partnership for Environmental Community Action) enabled Project Watershed to work on developing a community-based initiative for carbon assessment in estuaries.

Scuba Divers – subtidal eelgrass research

Project Watershed conducted research with the goal to develop a protocol suitable for coastal communities on the Pacific coast to identify rates of carbon sequestration in estuaries and to restore eelgrass and saltmarsh habitats lost due to human activities. It is hoped community-based projects will be recognized for the carbon they sequester and store.

The protocol included four components: mapping, estimating carbon stores and estimating carbon sequestration rates. Project Watershed developed field methods that could be easily followed by other community groups.
