Project Watershed is Hiring Environmental Technicians!

Background

The Comox Valley Project Watershed Society is an action-oriented environmental non-profit organization. Our mission is to promote community stewardship of Comox Valley watersheds through education, information, and action. We work to protect and restore the watersheds, estuaries, and nearshore ecosystems within the Comox Valley of Vancouver Island and beyond.

While the output of Project Watershed’s work is the protection and restoration of our local watersheds and associated sensitive habitats, the process by which we carry out our objective is also of prime importance. By involving our community in stewardship, training and skill building, we hope to foster an enduring relationship between citizens and their watersheds to empower them as stewards of their local landscapes.

Job Description

We will be hiring two environmental technicians who will be supporting Project Watershed’s restoration and monitoring projects for the summer of 2023. These individuals will support our Restoration Specialist and Restoration & Research Lead in carrying out maintenance, monitoring, and restoration of two main sites in the Comox Valley, Kus-kus-sum (including its surrounding ecosystems), and Glen Urquhart Creek. This will include invasive species monitoring and management, native species planting, water quality monitoring, supporting field assessments and monitoring of restoration and reference sites.

These positions are part-time for 2 months starting June 26th, 2022. Each technician will contribute 30 hours a week at a rate of $22.00/hr. Applicants must be between 18 – 30 years old and returning to school in the fall.

These positions are ideal for youth and early career professionals looking to advance their knowledge and expertise in field work, restoration, and watershed stewardship. On-site and in-office training and mentorship will be offered to ensure that employees are equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to inform their work and benefit their career futures. Project Watershed aims to promote diversity, equity and inclusion, and empower young people with skills and knowledge to act as watershed stewards within their communities.

Qualifications/Expectations

• Applicants must be between 18 – 30 years old and returning to school in the fall
• Some work or educational experience in environmental sector, conservation, or resource management
• Enthusiasm working outside in variable conditions
• Ability to work effectively as a team
• Previous knowledge of local flora and fauna considered an asset
• Knowledge of invasive species management considered an asset
• Ability to work with hand tools, gardening equipment and small machinery an asset
• Proven ability to develop and maintain effective, co-operative relationships
• Ability to work weekends
• Ability to lift up to 50lbs and work in physically challenging conditions
• First Aid and/or WHIMIS an asset
