Thank you to everyone who helped raise funds for ecological restoration, research and education through the Ken Kirkby Challenge this summer. Over $55,000 was raised through donations, a raffle and the Paintings, By The Numbers event.

The Paintings By The Numbers event sponsored by Odlum Brown was the single largest source of funds for the campaign bringing in around $30,000. It was a fun event that brought together art lovers, professionals and environmentalists alike. This year we added a few twists to the event. First off, blanks were included in the draw for names. When a blank was drawn any attendee could bid for a painting or to move themselves up in the draw. Second, we held a live auction at the end of the event as we had extra paintings on hand.

As usual, 40 KNOTS offered us a beatuiful setting and wonderful staff for the event. On top of contributing $974 from Safe Haven wine sales, Brenda Hertman-Craig also purchased a ticket and was a participant in the event.

As an added bonus, some of Ken’s family members, Nana Cook, Michael and Yuko Kirkby, were able to attend the event. It was great to be able to celebrate Ken and his work with them. Nana’s remark at hearing how much was raised was “Ken would have been so proud!”

In addition to our event sponsor, Odlum Brown, and venue sponsor, 40 Knots, we would also like to thank Luke Blu Guthrie who provided music and the sound system, Stephanie Noel from Cheffanie who provided the chocolate mousse, Nicola North for the booklet design and Bryan Walwork for the photography. A special thank you goes out to the 18 volunteers who spent about 60 hours helping set up and run the event. It takes a community and we are so greatful for ours!
